Family FunK Night is a monthly program at the Weaver Bolden Branch in which families can enjoy quality time together during an evening of hands-on STEAM learning. The program is modeled on the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities’ Prime Time Family Reading Night, which aims to make reading a fun family activity to improve literacy and family bonding.
For each program, we provide dinner, an educational family activity, and a take-home project or prize for the children or families. Each segment of the program is designed to make it easy for parents to participate in learning experiences with their children: learning activities are scalable to be accessible and fun for toddlers to teenagers; dinner is provided so parents can relax and enjoy the evening without rushing, and take-home items include books, movies, and handmade projects the family can enjoy together.
Previous Events & Partnerships
Educational activities in the past have included exploring astronomy with the Alabama Museum of Natural History, learning about blues music with a concert from the Alabama Blues Project Advanced Band, making soap with Left Hand Soap Company, painting pottery with All Fired Up, programming robots with TPL’s Teen Tech Lab, and planting take-home vegetable gardens with Druid City Garden Project. In choosing our activities, we strive not only to provide a range of STEAM subjects to explore, but also to partner with local businesses and organizations to foster community networking and relationship-building.
